Florine Hill Lucas Hendrix (1918 - 2011)

Florine Hill Lucas Hendrix, 92, passed away Friday, Feb. 18, 2011, at a nursing center in Fort Worth, after a very full and blessed life. Memorial service: 2 p.m. Friday in Watson Chapel at University Baptist Church, 2720 Wabash Ave., Fort Worth. Entombment: Greenwood Mausoleum. Visitation: The family will receive friends 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Greenwood Funeral Home. Memorials: If desired, memorials in Florine's honor may be made to Baylor University or University Baptist Church. Florine was born April 15, 1918, in Sour Lake to Bettie Alberta Garrett and Asa Edwin Hill, a Baptist minister. She grew up in Waco, where she attended Seventh and James Baptist Church and graduated from Waco High School. Florine attended Baylor University, as did all of her seven brothers and sisters, her parents and her daughter. She married John Harold Lucas in 1952 and moved to Bordentown, N.J., with him where he was co-owner of Bordentown Military Institute. Just a few years after her beloved daughter, Susan, was born, Harold tragically died of a heart attack in 1956. In 1961, she and her daughter moved back to Texas and made their home in Fort Worth, to be near her brother, Homa Hill, and sister, Ruth Hill Shirley. She was the bookkeeper for DeWitt Clark Lumber Co. in Waco for 15 years. She enjoyed traveling and went on many wonderful trips including Europe, Scandinavia, Hawaii, Alaska, Canada, Mexico, South America, and the Caribbean Islands. She married Ernest E. Hendrix, a retired Army colonel, in 1991. Florine was devoted to University Baptist Church and was a lifelong Baptist. She treasured her many friendships from her active membership of the Woman's Club of Fort Worth, Tanglewood Garden Club, and her church. She especially loved Baylor University and participated in many events at Baylor for senior citizens. Florine's faith, family and friends were the essence of her life. She loved people and enjoyed talking with everyone, but she especially loved to be with her family. She found immense joy being with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. This gracious and remarkable lady will be truly missed by her family and dear friends. The family wishes to express gratitude to the caring drivers for Meals On Wheels who she looked forward to seeing every week, her caregivers from Certified Home Health Care, and Dawn, her home health nurse. Thank you, Dhaulet, for your exceptional care, precious love and devotion. She cherished you. She was also blessed to have several compassionate neighbors who were very helpful and meant a lot to her. Florine was preceded in death by her parents, both husbands, and all her brothers and sisters. Survivors: Daughter and son-in-law, Susan and Mark York of Fort Worth; grandchildren, Marshall York of Fort Worth and Lindsey York Hill and husband, Roger, of Yucca Valley, Calif.; great-grandchildren, Hailey, Hunter and Hayden Hill; nephews, John Hill of Fort Worth and Homa Hill Jr. of Jackson, Miss.; nieces, Cleva Jo Howard of Lake Forest, Calif., Nancy Lucas of Middletown, N.J., and Sheryl Hill of Waco.
